Column: Calculating patient’s ‘worth’ by simple formula is wrong

Is a person with a chronic illness less valuable than a healthy person? I realize this is an uncomfortable question, but as our elected officials and policy makers address the tough issue of bringing down drug costs, they need to have a full understanding of how health plans contain costs associated with medications. Unfortunately, health plans do have methods to answer this question, with policies that penalize people with chronic illnesses.
